The aquaculture industry is a major economic factor in British Columbia. There are a number of different types of species being raised in British Columbia's waters. The diverse forms of sea life range from fin fish (predominantly salmon but including experiments in black cod and sturgeon) to mollusks and bivalves (oysters, mussels, scallops and the like) to such an oddball yet indigenous species as wolf eels. The spin-offs from this industry include such important sources of community employment; as site workers, processing plant staff, skilled works like commercial divers and mechanics as well as technical work for biologists, chemists and veterinarians.
Mountain Marine has been employed in this industry for a half a decade now with a very experienced crew, some of which harken back to the “Wild West” days of the late 80's and early 90's. Our people have seen this industry go from an unregulated gold rush, boom and bust mentality into very stable and responsible corporate citizenship. With the advent of major international investors, tremendous changes have been brought about and these changes serve to help allay any environmental concerns.
Farm Installation and Anchoring
Mountain Marine has been involved in “turnkey” farm site installations and demobilizations since its inception in 2000. We commonly perform complete site installations. Our crews are very experienced. We can provide job specific equipment that has been tailored to perform this work.
A typical scenario would have us arrive at a bare stretch of water with only paint marks on the shoreline to denote rock pin positions and installation plans in hand and a barge load of anchor blocks, chain, rope and system pieces. We commence by assembling the farm from billets and cage sections.
The next step is done with the aid of expert positioning technicians; we drill and install the rock pins and measure/drop the anchors in place. From here we go on to position and tension the farm and site shed and then the down hauls and nets. Typically we are pulling away as the site is receiving final inspection and the live haul boat is preparing to spill fish.
Material Feed Supply
While not a major player in the feed fish delivery business, we do supply feed, as required, on short notice. We can also provide general cargo delivery services, septic services or garbage removal. Our terminal on the Sunshine Coast may be a little out of the way... so we're always willing to load wherever the customer desires.
Mountain Marine is always on the move from our base in Sechelt to the West Coast and up the inside as far as the Charlottes. It can't hurt to give us a call and see if one of our vessels is in your area at any given time.
Net Changing
The industry has seen a real shift in bio-density efficiencies and the desire to provide larger cages. With this increase in cage sizes it has required larger equipment to handle the job of net changing and delivery to net lofts for treatment/repairs.
Mountain Marine has made an effort to keep up with these changes by providing job specific equipment for handling the now standard “100 by's”. We can swap nets and deliver to Campbell River or wherever desired in a timely, safe and efficient manner. We are fully cognizant of bio-security issues and maintain a clean operation.
